Performing artists and Bay Area expats Cynthia Adams of Fellow Travelers Performance Group (FTPG) and Li Chiao-Ping of Li Chiao-Ping Dance (LCPD) will present an imaginative concert of multimedia work, spoken word and dance/theater performance at CounterPULSE, Friday-Saturday, May 11-12, 2012.

Celebrate Mother's Day weekend with this concert of five works by Adams and Li.

In "109th Bead," a multimedia solo, Ms. Adams interacts with pre-recorded, projected video characters. The ensuing effect is the three sides of the self converge to create an intimate dance dialogue, illuminating the range of roles and dimensions inherent in human nature. Continuing her tradition of blending spoken word, video, music and dance, Ms. Adams gives the audience a peek at an examined life. "109th Bead" was developed through a CHIME scholarship in 2008 with Izzie award winner Deborah Slater, and in collaboration with video artist Douglas Rosenberg and "avant-cabaret" composer Amy X. Neuburg.

Ms. Li's "RE: Joyce" is a solo dance with spoken word and video projection about her mother's journey to America, accompanied by the music of sound artist Stephen Vitiello. Los Angeles Times called it "…a beautiful solo...a tribute to her hard-working laundress mother. Combining film and spoken word, the sturdy Chiao-Ping brought muscular grace to this poignant tale of immigration through crisply articulated hand and footwork."

"Shifting Ground" by Ms. Li features fast-paced, kinetic choreography that shifts through time and space. Incorporating text from survivors of the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, the work is a collision of thoughts on natural disasters and geologic processes. Danced by Rachel Krinsky, Nicole Roerick and Liz Sexe, the work includes music composed and performed by Tim Russell and visual projections by Daniel Feiler.

The book "The Secret Life of Water" inspired Ms. Li's "Hado." With mesmerizing projections by award-winning video artist/director Douglas Rosenberg, "Hado" features company dancers and a cast of local performers in a work where water is explored and seen fundamentally, reflecting us and the world in which we live. "Li comes up with some wonderful movement here for herself and her company members. When they danced to François Couperin's music, I was enthralled and satisfied." -Isthmus

Ms. Adams is joined on stage with Bay Area performer Patricia Jiron for "A Women's Perspective Revisited," a humorous duet with movement, text and song based on images of historic and iconic women.

High-resolution photography, interviews with the artists and complimentary tickets for journalists are available by contacting Kelly Rupp at kellyrupp@uwalumni.com or 608-239-9926.
