Founded in 1990 by Li Chiao-Ping, whose work has been presented throughout
the U.S. as well as in Canada and Argentina, LI CHIAO-PING DANCE has
made Madison, Wisconsin its home since 1993. The company is dedicated
to offering programs of emotionally charged and athletic works, with
striking visual design and the music of contemporary composers. As a
choreographer/director, Li Chiao-Ping has created, produced and performed
over 60 works for the stage and screen. Ms. Li has received recognition
for her evening-length solos, such as "YELLOW RIVER" and "ENTOMBED WARRIOR",
as well as "THE MEN'S PROJECT", a concert made up of six solos choreographed
by Mark Dendy, Daniel Nagrin, Mel Wong, Gus Solomons jr., Joe Goode
and David Dorfman, performed by Ms. Li. "THE MEN'S PROJECT" was supported
by funding agencies including the Evjue Foundation, UW-Madison School
of Education, and the Graduate School. The company has received funding
from Dane County Cultural Affairs Commission, Madison CitiArts, Madison
Civic Center Foundation, Wisconsin Arts Board, and the National Endowment
for the Arts (NEA) as well as support from individuals.
Li’s collaborative work with other artists is equally respected, especially
her long-time creative work with visual artist Douglas Rosenberg. Their
evening-length multi-media "ODYSSEY", piece based on Homer's work of
the same title, was presented as a work-in-progress at the Cleveland
Experimental Choreographers Festival, The Yard, and the International
Video and Dance Festival of Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1997. “ODYSSEY”
made its premiere in Madison, Wisconsin in October of 1998. Their latest
collaboration is “VENOUS FLOW: STATES OF GRACE”, a meditative journey
through healing of the spirit and the body, incorporating the stories
of struggle, perseverance and triumph from individuals from our community.
Ms. Li has received numerous grants, honors, commissions, residencies
and awards. The Asian Pacific Women's Network and the National Arts
Association have given her awards and she has been nominated twice for
a Bonnie Bird Choreography Fund North American Award. She also received
first place awards in Choreography and in Performance from the Los Angeles
Arts Council in consecutive years. In 1996, Ms. Li was invited to be
a U.S. Representative in the International Choreographers Program at
the American Dance Festival. Ms. Li has received choreographic fellowships
from the Wisconsin Arts Board and Scripps/ADF Humphrey-Weidman-Limon
and was selected for one of the first UCLA National Dance/Media Fellowships.
She was awarded an Arts Consortium Faculty Development Award in the
Creative Arts in 1998 and the prestigious Romnes Award in 1999. In 2000,
LI CHIAO-PING DANCE has received grants from the Dane County Cultural
Affairs Commission, the Madison Civic Center Foundation, Madison CitiArts,
and the Kennedy Center “Artists As Educators” Fund. In addition, Ms.
Li’s ongoing research into her “Extreme Moves” concept of creating movement
was recently funded by the Virginia Horne Henry Fund.
LI CHIAO-PING DANCE has performed at the Kennedy Center’s Millennium
Stage (Washington, DC), Jacob’s Pillow (Lee, MA), Bates Dance Festival
(Lewiston, ME), Insight Arts Women's Performance Festival (Chicago),
Movable Beast Experimental Dance Festival (Chicago), Cleveland Experimental
Dance Festival, Dance Now Festival (New York), and Treasure in the House
series at Highways (Santa Monica, California). The company’s 1999-2000
season included performances at Philadelphia’s 2000 Feet: A Celebration
of World Dance, the Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage, the Women on
the Edge Festival in San Francisco, Alverno College in Milwaukee, WI,
the Danspace Project at St. Mark’s Church in New York City, and the
Chopin Theatre in Chicago.
